WEEK OF STOOM #6

~By Reek of STOOM~

For the week ending November 10th, 2019

Tuesday

I view the morning rain with trepdation, for I know that horror is at large. True to form, Bex The Hex bleeds into the Hollows with a kind of seeping motion that is quite noxious. Reaching into a worryingly lively sack, she pulls out a hare and suggests an evening repast. The hideous spectacle of watching her eat is an instant emetic and the sight of it reminds me of an album I’d been meaning to investigate: 'Rabbits’ (2019) by San Franciscan doom trio BRUME.

The mellow introduction to “Despondence” lilts and floats on soft vocals before gnarling fuzz smears tar-thickened riffage over grimy canvasses of despair. Low and slow is the lurching abomination of “Scurry,” lured by Sylph-like vocal magnetism that is reminiscent of Solar Halo’s modus operandi. A chilling cello refrain haunts the entrance to “Blue Jay” – a beacon to bleak, soul-strangling misery. “Lament” totters on crippled haunches of emaciated melodies and phantom power, a laval flow of funereal doom, whilst closer “Autocrat’s Fool” condenses the vile essences of the previous tracks into an all-encompassing finale of surging riffs and suffocating silences. Rabbits is a truly excellent example of craft and drama working in evil harmony!
